Chagas disease is the most important parasitic infection in the Americas. It is estimated that there are approximately 10 million people infected and more than 25 million are at risk of acquiring it. The Pan American Health Organization maintains that in Argentina there would be 1,600,000 people infected, 7,300,000 exposed and more than 300,000 affected by heart disease caused by this disease. The disease is caused by a parasite (Trypanosoma cruzi) and is potentially fatal due to the heart disease it causes. It also causes injuries to the digestive tract. Within the National Health Plan, the National Chagas Program 2011-2016 was developed. Its goals were to interrupt transmission, control the congenital route, improve diagnosis and treatment in children under 15 years of age, and prevent transmission caused by transfusions. The high-risk areas are located in the north of Argentina. This parasite can be acquired through several ways, a) by bite, b) blood transfusion c) from the mother to the fetus d) ingestion of infected food e) organ transplant from an infected donor f) laboratory accidents.
