The main objectives of the project are: Provide 40 special wheelchairs, with the necessary adaptations according to the patient's pathology. Patients will be referred by the Health Department of the City of Campinas, which organizes the list of families that cannot pay for chairs. Care for and train families so that they can adequately treat children with multiple disabilities, which will be carried out by the partner institution, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\"House for Paralytic Children of Campinas\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". The beneficiaries of the project are children with severe disabilities as a result of chronic childhood encephalopathy (cerebral palsy), spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and others. In general, patients have multiple disabilities. For these children, wheelchairs adapted to their physical conditions have the characteristics of prosthetics, as they provide better posture, support the body and allow the child to live and participate in activities, removing them from the confinement of a bed. Manufacturers offer standardized chairs, which can eventually be used without adaptations. However, as most patients have little motor control, in addition to postural disorders caused by scoliosis and other pathologies, in most cases the chairs must be customized. Patients will be evaluated by an occupational therapist from the collaborating organization, who will define the necessary adaptations, which will be made in the Paralytic Children's House workshop. From a sustainability point of view, the chairs have a long lifespan and can also be renewed and adapted to the child's growth. The statistics of births of children with chronic encephalopathy are 7 out of every thousand, which corresponds to 140 cases per year, in the city of Campinas alone. There are also cases of developmental pathology during childhood. Multiple deficiencies can also be caused by congenital malformations, genetic problems and others. According to the Municipal Health Department, there is an annual demand for around 400 special wheelchairs from low-income families. Part of this demand is provided by the city hall, and there are also non-governmental organizations that collaborate with donations. The objective of the project is to meet part of this demand, mainly serving children in early childhood, but also training families in appropriate practices to deal with the child patient. The collaborating organization is the Casa da Criança Paralítico de Campinas - Casa da Criança Paralítico de Campinas, which is a philanthropic and non-profit organization, founded in 1954 to help children who were victims of polio, which at the time was a serious epidemic. Today, polio is eradicated in Brazil and the organization works to provide free rehabilitation treatment for children and adolescents with physical and neurological disabilities.
